Emily Baines — Recorder

Emily will be teaching recorder and ensemble techniques at the 2006 workshop.

Commencing postgraduate study in 2001 at the Royal Conservatorium, The Hague, The Netherlands, Emily studied recorder with Dorothea Winter, singing with Thea van der Putten & Gerda van Zelm. She also had a particular focus on recorder consort playing, early music theory & aesthetics with Peter van Heyghen. She has performed widely around The Netherlands as part of the acclaimed Fiori Consort. Emily has also performed in masterclasses for Kees Boeke, Gerd Lüneberger, Eric Menzel, Paul Hillier and Peter Holtslag. Previously Emily studied with Alan Davis in her native Birmingham, performing professionally with period theatre companies, Ex Cathedra and as a session musician for BBC Radio. As a student at Hull University she continued to perform widely on period instruments with various early music ensembles including numerous solo performances as part of the Beverly Early Music Festival. In 2001 she was also awarded the Mrs Sunderland prize for solo performance and the University Prize for Music. Emily continues to perform throughout The Netherlands and the UK.

Gambello BMW 2006

The 6th Gambello BMW aims to provide a fun and practical baroque forum for singers and players of a proficient technical standard.

Previous “baroque” experience is not essential.

At Gambello BMW 2006, advanced recorder consort playing will be facilitated by UK specialist, Emily Baines.

‘The best Gambello yet’ - Anon.

This year Gambello took place at the beautiful historic Clontarf Cottage, Balmain. Not only blending appropriately to the historic aspect of Gambello, it provided us with a comfortable home for the 3 Gambello days.

Present this year were 5 tutors - Tim Blomfield, Kirra Thomas, Chris Berensen, Kate Walpole and Nadia Piave (for details, please refer to previous posts).

Gambello attracted students from Sydney as well as interstate and overseas. Many of the students were experiendced "baroque" musicians; it was good to also have modern musicians trying baroque instruments for the first time. (This is always such a delightful experience to witness.)

The first morning we learnt all about temperament. To my own delight I discovered finally how Bach’s “well” temperament sounds i.e. the temperament he used for the Well Tempered Klavier. After a beautiful morning tea of Gambello blend coffee and home made muffins prepared by Jackie Blomfield, Gambello’s caterer, we split into two teams to play chamber music and the other to do master classes, after which we had lunch on the verandah in the sun.

The following morning was delighted by a similar quality morning tea, chamber music, master classes and a most inspired game in which we all learnt the rhetoric and tendencies of commonly used figured basses in Baroque music.

At our disposal every afternoon was Nadia Piave with her stunning voice to practice recitative in the Italian, German and English styles. This was invaluable, particularly for bass instrumentalists who rarely have the chance to rehearse recitative at professional engagements. It is not so often that bassoon is requires to play a recitative, but it has been asked of me and I was grateful for this opportunity to practice it.

If you are driving to Clontarf Cottage, Wallace St, Balmain, please be advised that parking in Wallace Street is extremely limited (you may be lucky!)

However:

Drive down Darling St, Balmain past the shopping district in a harbourly direction
Go through roundabout (give way!) at the Congregational Church (Balmain Markets) and down the hill
On your right, you will notice (a) the London Hotel (b) Ann Street (c) Stephen Street (d) Adolphus Street (e) Bowling Club
After the Bowling Club, turn first right into Ewenton Street (it may be easiest to park in this street and walk)
Take the first right into Charles Street, which leads behind the Bowling Club
At the end, turn left into narrow Wallace Lane
When you emerge from Wallace Lane, Clontarf Cottage is directly ahead of you
Turn left into Wallace Street
No Parking is allowed whatsoever on the brick-paved part of the street to the right
If all else fails, park in Darling, Ewenton or Adolphus Streets

Nadia Piave — Voice

Nadia will be teaching baroque vocal techniques at the 2005 Workshop.

Nadia has studied voice in Sydney and in Italy. Nadia graduated from Sydney University with a Master of Performance in 1999. In 1997 Nadia was awarded the Frederick May Foundation Scholarship for further study in Italy. She has participated in master classes with Howard Crook, Graham Pushee, Andrew Lawrence-King, Rinaldo Alessandrini, Marco Longhini, Cristina Miatello and Claudine Ansermet. Nadia performs regularly with some of Sydney’s finest baroque ensembles including Salut! and is a member of the 16th century group Trio Bassano. Nadia also performs with Glenn Amer as the Opera/Comedy duo Cosi Fun Tutti Frutti!. Nadia holds a part-time teaching position at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

Kirra Thomas — Baroque Violin

Kirra will be teaching baroque string and ensemble techniques at the 2005 Workshop.

As a member of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Kirra is already establishing herself in the world of period performance, performing regularly with the Steinitz Bach Players in the London Bach Festival, St James Baroque, New Dutch Academy, and other groups in the Netherlands and U.K. She is also guest lecturer in Early Music at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.

English born Kirra’s earliest studies were with her father, Ronald Thomas, at the Sydney Conservatorium, when her family moved to Australia. Returning to England in 1996, she attended the Guildhall School of Music & Drama as well as Margess Internationale Summer School in Switzerland. Studying with Pauline Scott, Kirra completed her BMus (Hons) and MMus perf. on the Advanced Instrumental Studies course.

Discovering a love of early music through performing in London and at the Batignano Festival in Tuscany, Kirra commenced baroque violin studies with Rachel Podger. After making her London debut in 2000 at the Linbury Studio, Covent Garden, Kirra was awarded an Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust Overseas Scholarship for postgraduate study with Alex Kerr in Amsterdam & baroque violin with Elizabeth Wallfisch at the Royal Conservatory, The Hague, where she completed studies in 2005. She was also a scholarship student at the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado from 2002-4, studying with Alex Kerr, Naoko Tanaka, Jennifer John & Sylvia Rosenberg (chamber music).

Kate Walpole — Baroque Bassoon

Kate will be teaching baroque bassoon and ensemble techniques at the 2005 Workshop.

Kate finished her undergraduate studies in bassoon at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

As a former member of the Australian Youth Orchestra she took part in a classical wind workshop with the wind section of the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century where she met Danny Bond and Donna Agrell. Kate was later accepted in Donna Agrell’s class at the Conservatorium of Amsterdam. Kate has performed throughout Europe from Reykyavik to Sarajevo with the European Union Baroque Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Nineteenth Century, the Ricercar Consort, Concerto Royal Köln, Barcelona Early Music Festival, Academia Montis Regalis, Ensemble Zefiro and La Petite Bande. After ten years of studying and working in Europe, Kate returned to Australia in 2004 and is now resident in Brisbane.

Chris Berensen — Harpsichord

Chris will be teaching early keyboard playing and ensemble techniques at the 2005 Workshop.

Chris is in his 4th year of a Bachelor of Music degree at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music studying early keyboard playing with Neal Peres da Costa. There Chris has participated in masterclasses with the fortepianist David Ward and renowned lutenist Eduardo Eguez. And as a composer, he has had several pieces performed and recorded. In 1999, he won an international composing competition run by Musica Viva, and his piece was recorded by Florilegium. Chris has co-founded a new dynamic baroque ensemble, La Folia, and has played continuo with Salut!, the St. Laurence Baroque Orchestra, the Sydneian Bach Choir (in its current & ongoing exploration of the entire Bach cantata repertory) and the New Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra of Cologne.

Preparing for Gambello Baroque Music Workshop

Themes:

Accompaniment of recitative and aria from the singer’s point of view
The accompaniment of the solo sonata
JS Bach’s unaccompanied solo works

Singers:
Any recitative or aria that you would like to work on from an accompaniment or ensemble point of view. Please post (or fax) music score with your application.

Instrumentalists:
Each player will be required to accompany a vocal work, as well as accompany another treble or bass instrument participant. Parts will be sent to you. Please post (or fax) music score of your chosen sonata with your application.
